Light therapy is not a new fad, it’s been around for thousands of years treating skin disease and depression. Most popular light therapy is Red Light Therapy.
What is Red Light Therapy
Red Light Therapy (RLT) is also known as photobiomodulation (PBM), Near Infrared Sauna (NIR), low level light therapy (LLLT). Red light falls into the visible part of the light spectrum between 630-700 nm on the electromagnetic scale and is used to treat the surface of the skin. Near infrared wavelengths fall into the invisible
part of the light spectrum between 700 and 1200 nm. What does this mean? The longer the wavelength, the deeper the penetration to deliver energy to the cells, stimulating, healing and relieving pain.
This low-light wavelength energy can pass through human tissue much easier than other wavelengths. Thus, making Red Light Therapy a natural jump-start to the process of tissue recovery and other forms of rejuvenation through increased blood flow, collagen stimulation and more.
This energy is absorbed by the body and stimulates adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the mode of chemical energy transportation at the cellular level. In other words, cells that receive this rejuvenating, anti-aging energy boost are able to perform their natural functions at a heightened level.
Typically you’ll find most Red Light Therapy (commonly called infrared saunas) will look like a tanning bed in which you would lay in. But red lights does not give you a tan, therefore you will not get vitamin D from these lights. You will find these types of light therapy’s in most spa’s, health & wellness centers and gyms. At home models can be a portable infrared sauna, there are several models you can choose from. Another type of “at home” device are panels of red and near infrared lights that can be hung behind a door, table top and hand held devices.

What to expect
A lot of sweating should be expected, many find it relaxing. Sweating will help your body detox, some find that afterward they feel a bit lightheaded (that was my dad). Drinking water and getting plenty of rest are recommended. No serious adverse effects have been reported with near infrared saunas, and this type of treatment seems to be safe for the majority of people.
That being said, it’s still a good idea to talk to your doctor or health care practitioner about starting treatments with infrared saunas if you have sensitive skin, a history of heart problems or take medications. Infrared saunas are powerful devices and capable of changing your perspiration and heart rates, so it’s safest for some people to work with a knowledgeable practitioner while starting treatments to monitor their reactions and progress.
